Audacity Book Club: November Read

Audacity Book Club: November Read

By Celeste Daniels

Hello Audacious Readers!

It’s the final few weeks of the year. I have to say this has been both the quickest and slowest year of my life. So much to reflect on, but for now, let’s escape a little. Last month, we remembered the importance of discovering our own voice in The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. Now, it’s time to get cozy and maybe indulge in a little bit of romance with the Truth According to Ember by Danica Nava.

Ember Cardinal is no stranger to a little white lie. It was usually a harmless compliment or a small denial to save someone’s feelings. And while she would love to be a little more truthful in her life, lies make things much easier. So, when she gets tired of getting rejected from every job she applies to, she decides that maybe a switch from checking “Native American” on the ethnicity question to “white”—only a half lie, technically.

Soon after, Ember lands her dream job working as a corporate accountant in Oklahoma City. Even her love life seems to be looking up when she catches the eye of the IT guy and fellow Native, Danuwoa Colson. Sparks fly and they soon start sneaking around despite the company’s no-dating policy. But when they are caught by a fellow employee on a work trip, they threaten to expose the relationship. As they try to navigate the blackmail, the lies grow along with it. Soon, she has to decide whether to keep going or to the truth, even if it costs her everything.

Quick-witted and honest, The Truth According to Ember is a return to classic rom coms while being fresh and relevant. This book is available online, at your local bookstore, Bookshop.org as well as your local library. And remember to check out the book club merch available now!

I hope you enjoy it, and I will see you in November for the full review. As always, make sure to read audaciously!
