Audacity Book Club: Summer Break

Audacity Book Club: Summer Break

By Celeste Daniels

Hello, audacious readers!

I think we all need a break.

The world has felt like it’s going mad and while we have been taking it one day at a time, it’s been many, many days. And while I would love to say, “let’s tune out and read,” that’s not always the solution. Sometimes, we need to give ourselves a moment to just breathe. So, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Breathe, organize, plan, scream into a pillow, wallow without pulling ourselves in a million directions.

As always, I’ll leave with a few suggestions if you decide to crack open a book or put on an audiobook (yes, both count as reading):

  • What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez: A South American heiress travels to Cairo to solve the mystery around her parents’ death while fighting the attraction she feels towards her guardian’s assistant.

  • The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates: Part memoir, part travelogue, this book is about how the stories we tell shape our realities and how the best way to liberate ourselves is to face even the most difficult of truths.

  • The Translation of Dr. Apelles by David Treuer: A lone translator takes up the task of translating an indigenous love story in a language that only he speaks.

  • Goodnight Tokyo by Atsuhiro Yoshida: A cozy, interwoven tale of people who cross paths during the midnight hour in Tokyo.

  • Trouble the Saints by Alaya Dawn Johnson: An urban fantasy about a young woman from Harlem, who has to face her past decisions when then come back to haunt her.

  • Anything You Want by Whoever You Want: Whether chilling by the pool or staying close to the A/C, take a load off and read whatever you want. A novel, a magazine, a comic—the literary world is your oyster.

Hope you guys enjoy this summer break. I’ll be back in July, ready to dive back in. If you want to read with me, feel free to join me for 25 minutes on June 25th at 5:30 p.m. on IG live as part of the Read 25 Day challenge. No pressure, no distractions—just 25 minutes of reading.

Until then, as always, don’t forget to read audaciously!
