How to August Reset Your Career & Your Business

How to August Reset Your Career & Your Business

By Jessica Wise

The girlies on TikTok and YouTube are spilling all the August reset hacks for fitness, home, and their definition of femininity, but very few are talking about how the same can apply to your business or your 9 to 5. Whether you’re a corporate baddies or a new age content creator, most of us spend more time on the job than we do at home or at leisure. Why not apply that same reset energy to your work?

If you’ve been feeling beaten down, burned out, or just plain bored at work, it might be time for a reset.

And before you stop scrolling and accuse me of trying to make you a workaholic, take a second to think realistically. Chances are, unless you’ve won the lottery, you’re not quitting your job today. You’re not closing your business today. Whether you hate it, hate your customers, or hate the people you work with, an August reset will help you carry on until you can reach the other side. These tips aren’t spells. They won’t magically fix everything, but they will make things easier so you can get back to focusing on what you’re really after—a softer summer.

Nothing is guaranteed, but for the best results, I recommend doing these actions in order:

Clean your workspace.

You won’t do your best work or even want to be in your workspace if it’s filthy. Dust off your keyboards. Wipe up that coffee stain you’ve been pretending not to see. Throw out or recycle anything you no longer need on your desk. Just like in your home, a clear workspace makes a clearer head. You can even brighten it up with new decor.

Check in on your goals.

Got a vision board? A forgotten list of goals because they were written 20 pages ago in your notebook? Revisit and reevaluate all these things. What worked, what didn’t work, and what can you do to realign? It’s okay to drop some goals that are no longer for you, or pick up new ones.

This time, give yourself some actionable micro-goals to help you better reach them in the next few months. If you want to launch a new product, start doing competitor research or ideating the packaging. If you’re looking for a new job, but haven’t had time to reboot your resume, ask a successful friend for help or hire a resume writer. You can rededicate yourself to your goals without letting your goals run you. And the best way to remember that is to hit the reset button and give them another look.

Take an admin day.

This is where you do all those necessary-but-boring chores for your career that have been piling up. Need to update your website? Pre-record content? Redo your resume? Refresh your LinkedIn profile? Take a quiet day over the weekend to do it. Turn on some music, light a candle, and put on some comfy-but-productive clothes. Romanticize the mundane to make it feel like a ritual. You might not get it all done in one day, but aim to check at least one of these looming tasks off the list. You’ll thank yourself for it later.

Create or return to routines.

Your routines aren’t here to bore you. They’re here to make room for the fun stuff! When you have a routine instead of flying by the seat of your pants, you waste less time. This gives you more time to do what you want to do for your brand versus what you have to do. And just like your goals, these routines are yours. You can adjust them however you want.
